OK, I see /usr/freebsd-dist as the default BSDINSTALL_DISTDIR under https://man.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=bsdinstall&sektion=8&manpath=freebsd-release#ENVIRONMENT_VARIABLES.
